Meatball and Provolone Heroes

Updated: May 25, 2021

I think I mentioned how much I love meatballs, and actually, so do my sons. I make all the different kinds that I add to soups, salads, bowls, and pasta. While my sons like them straight up the best, sometimes a sandwich is in order. So here is my Meatball and Provolone Hero. Saucy- hot Italian-style meatballs are nestled in between some good crusty bread and topped with provolone cheese. The cheese has a slightly sharp flavor which gives this sandwich a little boost. This is as good as it gets.

Ingredients for Meatball and Provolone Heroes:

1/2 batch Essential Slow Cooker Meatballs, recipe below

1 baguette cut into four equal-sized pieces

4 slices provolone cheese, halved

Parmesan cheese for serving

Ingredients for Essential Slow Cooker Meatballs:

Yields approximately 34 meatballs

1 pound Italian Sausage, casings removed

1 1/2 pounds mix of veal, beef, and pork is also known as meatloaf mix

3 cloves garlic, minced

2/3 cup plain panko

3/4 cup whole milk

2 eggs

3/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano Cheese

3 tablespoons chopped parsley

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1-40 ounce jar tomato sauce (5 cups)

Time-Saving Tip: The meatballs can be cooked a day in advance and gently reheated before serving.

Let's see what we need.

We're ready to cook.

If you have prepared meatballs and sauce scroll down to see how to assemble the hero.

Combine the panko and milk; let sit for at least 5 minutes.

Combine the meat, sausage, panko mixture, and the rest of the ingredients except for the sauce. Shape the mix into 11/2- 2 inch sized meatballs.

Pour the sauce into the slow cooker. Add the meatballs, so they are in a single layer; cook for four hours on low.

Have all of your ingredients ready to build the heroes. When cutting the bread, make sure to leave the spine in tact.

Spread a few spoonfuls of hot tomato sauce on the bottom piece of bread and the top piece. Top with three hot meatballs and layer with 2 halves of the cheese. The cheese will melt if the meatballs are hot. If not, loosely wrap each sandwich with foil and heat in a preheated 375-degree oven until cheese is melted.

They're ready! Meatball and Provolone Heroes are so delicious. And these are a breeze to make if you happen to have a stash of these awesome meatballs in the freezer. I like to sprinkle them with a little Parmesan cheese before serving.
